As we have been developing our calf rearing enterprise over the last decade, a new opportunity arose, and now we will take you through the experience.
With a calf rearing scheme through Warrendale Wagyu for the rearing, growing & finishing of Wagyu cattle.
Warrendale are a dedicated, forward thinking farming business putting farmers at the core of their principle of bringing a superior product through a modern approach to agriculture.
The difficulty of the 3 stages system of rearing, growing & finishing of British Wagyu that does not work efficiently.
The initial rearing stage takes place between 3 weeks - 5/7 months.
Then the growers leave at average 150kg to move to the grower farmers to take the cattle through to 14 months old.
Then the finisher farms take care of the wagyu with specialised feeding regimes to enhance the wagyu quality.
Or so you will be told.
We were dedicated to rearing the British Wagyu cross calves to a high standard and with the best of practices & protocols.
This scheme will certainly make your farm unsustainable going forward with price fixing and an unorganised modern approach to an integrated scheme.

Being part of a new integrated beef rearing scheme such as Warrendale is a new format instead of b&b, this allows for cattle ownership throughout the scheme from day one up to finishing. As long as you are willing to keep livestock until they are finished it might not be a scheme for you.
If you do not want the initial outlay of costs of purchasing, there is a financing system setup with Oxbury Bank where they hold the cattle tag numbers and charge a daily interest on the amount paid per animal. Warrendale then settle this arrangement as the cattle move through the scheme from one farm partner to another and pay you the remainder of the animal price. This has not always happened on time and cost farmer partners a lot in extra interest.
The scheme is setup with three core areas: calf rearing, growing and finishing. As many farmer partners have come to realise, they just want to load as many cattle as they can onto you and then they won't move them on when you request them to be sold to the next partner.
They pay around £3 per kg, They are currently paying at least 50p below other schemes rearing wagyu.
It is completed by a number of area representatives, that are dictated to by senior management that don't care about the individual farmer partners as long as they are alright.
When you join Warrendale you will gain access to their online beef register if you keep at them for the log in details. This system is very useful at helping you know that you are being mislead with false pricing.
The price is worked out from what is termed as 'the matrix pricing structure', it is revalued every March and September depending upon current market conditions. This allows for prices to be paid determined on the weight of the animal and not the conformation like the EUROP gird.
As the cattle come to finisher weights there is the base price how the matrix calculates and a top up depending upon the marble scoring of the beef that ranges from 1-11 scoring. 11 being the best marbling.
It is designed to save them money and cost you a lot.

If you have been affected by this scheme, please get in contact as we need to take action to bring about change to farming contracts and for better treatment of partners.

We have collaborated with Warrendale Wagyu to rear Wagyu calves up to 7 months and older for their integrated beef scheme.
